What is IES Exam?

IES 2020 interview schedule was released by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on January 27. The IES personality test will begin from March 8 at the UPSC office premises in New Delhi. IES main 2020 result with names was released on December 15 by Union Public Service Commission. It is a tradition now that the apex recruiting body releases the result with names for all the exams.

Earlier, IES 2020 main result was released on December 11 by UPSC. The qualified candidates will be called for the IES interviews. The schedule for the UPSC IES 2020 interviews will be released later. The qualified candidates will be intimated through e-summon letter for the interviews. The candidates need to fill the IES interview DAF till January 5 and no extension in the dates will be provided. The candidature of the candidates will be cancelled who did not fill their DAF within the stipulated time. The Interviews will be conducted in New Delhi only. IES 2020 main exam was conducted on October 18 amid the coronavirus pandemic. The UPSC allotted the nearest exam centres to the candidates for the Engineering Services 2020 main examination. The IES main exam question papers were followed the expected exam pattern and barring one or two questions, all the questions were on the expected lines. The candidates said that the question paper was a bit lengthy and tough. The compulsory questions were tough and tricky. The UPSC released the IES 2020 main admit card on September 22. Following the Civil Services admit card, the Engineering Services Admit card was also released before time. Along with the IES admit card 2020, the UPSC also released the IES 2020 main exam time table. Earlier, UPSC activated the IES 2020 main exam centre choice option again. The facility to change the IES exam centre was open till September 13. UPSC announced new IES 2020 exam dates on its website on July 14. UPSC on July 1 issued a one-line notice to postpone the IES 2020 main exam. In the original UPSC exam calendar, the IES main exam was scheduled to be conducted on June 28 but it was postponed because of coronavirus to August 9. Later, the UPSC had rescheduled the IES main exam 2020 to October 18.

Indian Engineering Services (IES) exam, also known as Engineering Services Examination (ESE), is a national level recruitment exam organised by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The exam is conducted to recruit candidates for engineering positions for the various department working under the Government of India. The Engineering Services Examination is conducted for four branches of engineering namely:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering

In the past, this exam had been conducted with the name of Indian Engineering Services(IES) exam. The IES exam is considered as one of the toughest examinations in the country. Nearly, two lakh candidates appear for the examination every year. Engineering Services Exam or IES exam recruits the Group A and Group B officers at the technical positions for Government of India. The IES exam is a three-stage recruitment process - IES Preliminary, IES Main and Personality Test. On the basis of merit of candidates in IES exam, they are recommended to the Union Government for the available posts. Nature of work for an engineering officer selected through IES exam depends on the engineering branch and the cadre s/he is recruited for.

IES Exam Eligibility

It is mandatory for candidates to comply with the eligibility norms as prescribed by UPSC in order to be able to appear for the Engineering Services Examination. The admissions at all the three stages of the examination will be purely provisional and are subject to fulfilling the eligibility norms.

Nationality

Candidates should be:

  • A citizen of India/A subject of Nepal, Bhutan or Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962.
  • A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi and Ethiopia or Vietnam, intending to stay in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

Age Limit

Aspirants must have attained an age of 21 years and must not have attained an age of 30 years on January 1, 2020. Candidates should not be born earlier than January 2, 1990 and not later than January 1, 1999.

Physical Examination

Candidates must be physically fit for the admissions to Engineering Service Examination as per the guidelines mentioned 

Educational Qualification

A candidate must possess:

  • Degree in Engineering from a recognised university
  • Passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India)
  • Obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University college which is recognised in India
  • Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers
  • Passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II & III or Sections A & B of the Aeronautical Society of India
  • Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics & Radio Engineers, London held after November 1959

For Naval Armament Service – MSc degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.

For Indian Radio Regulatory Service – MSc degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject or MSc with Physics and Radio Communication or Electronics or Telecommunication as a special subject.

The upper age limit of 30 years is relaxable up to 35 years in case of government servants serving in the following categories:

Note: Relaxation will not be considered to probationary officers appointed against a permanent post. However, relaxation in case of probation will be considered of the officer appointed already retains a lien on a permanent post in a Department/Office under the control of authorities as listed above.

Age relaxation in case of Railways

Officers serving Indian Railways will also be treated at par with the Indian Railway officers for age relaxation. The upper age limit for various categories is given below:

IES Exam Process

Step 1: IES Application Form 2020

  • The candidates need to fill the IES application form 2020. The forms are available online on the official website of UPSC
  • While filling up the form, candidates have to select the preferred venue for the test centre
  • After filling the form, the candidates need to submit the prescribed application fees as per their category

Step 2: Download IES Admit Card 2020

  • The IES admit card 2020 will be issued on the official website for downloads. The candidates will need their application number and date of birth to download the admit card
  • UPSC admit card is an important document having a variety of information. We suggest preserving the admit cards until the admission process is successfully conducted

Step 3: IES Preliminary Exam 2020

  • Students need to appear for IES 2020 preliminary entrance exam as per the schedule mentioned in the important date’s section
  • Aspirants are advised to reach the exam centre at least an hour before the commencement of the exam

Step 4: IES Prelims Result 2020

  • UPSC will be declaring the results for IES 2020 preliminary exam on their official website.
  • Candidates shall check their IES 2020 preliminary results once announced, by simply submitting their application number and date of birth on the official website.
  • After the IES Result for prelims 2020, the candidates need to fill out the IES Main Detailed Application Form(DAF) for the IES Main Exam 2020.

Step 5: IES Main Exam 2020

  • Students who clear the IES preliminary examination will be allowed to appear for IES 2020 main entrance exam as per the schedule mentioned in the important date’s section
  • Aspirants are advised to reach the exam centre at least an hour before the commencement of the IES Main exam

Step 6: IES Main Result 2020

  • UPSC will be declaring the results for IES 2020 main entrance exams on their official website.
  • Candidates will be able to check their IES 2020 main results once announced, by simply submitting their application number and date of birth on the official website.
  • Candidates who clear the IES 2020 main exam will then be called for the interview round. This will be the final stage of the IES exam selection process.

Step 7: IES Interview 2020

IES selection process comprises the Personal Interview round. Candidates who clear both IES pre and main examination are only allowed to participate in the final interview round. Only those candidates who clear the personal interview round will be qualified for the recruitment process.

Step 8: IES Result 2020

UPSC will commence with the recruitment of IES 2020 qualified candidates at various government offices on the basis of the chosen branch if engineering and vacancies available. This will be the final process after which candidates will join the government offices as Executive engineers, mid-level managers or bureaucrats.

Step 9: IES Cut-off and Reserve List

IES cut-off will be released after the final result. In addition to the IES cut-off marks, IES reserve list will also be issued stating the number of candidates for each category and for each Engineering branch.

This will mark the end of the IES Exam process.

IES Answer Key

The UPSC releases the IES Answer Key after the IES result is declared. The IES answer key is the only authentic source to know the answers of the questions asked in the IES Prelims exam. The IES prelims exam is a new stage added in the Engineering Services exam. The candidates should download the IES prelims answer key of previous and with the previous year question paper and their answer key, the candidates can understand the important topics and areas from where the questions were asked. In addition to that the official answers can help them to prepare the topic in a better way.

IES Exam Centre

The IES prelims and the main exam are conducted at the designated UPSC exam centres. The list of UPSC IES exam centres is provided in the notification itself. The candidates can check the complete list of the IES exam centres below.

It may be noted that the provision of the sealing of the seats will take place on the number of candidates allotted to each of the centres. The centres for which sealing will take place will exclude Delhi, Dispur, Kolkata and Nagpur.

Allotment of IES Exam Centres will be made on first cum first serve basis. Applicants who are unable to occupy a seat in their choice of the centre will be allotted a seat in the remaining vacant seats at other centres.

Candidates should note that the request for change of examination centre will not be entertained under any circumstances.
