IES/ESE 2025: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will release the IES 2025 Result on the official website at upsc.gov.in. The Commission conducted the UPSC ESE (IES) 2025 Prelims exam on June 8, 2025 in two shifts. First shift started at 9:30 AM and second shift at 2:00 PM. Scroll down for analysis. The authority released the UPSC IES admit card 2025 on May 28, 2025 at upsc.gov.in. The UPSC ESE 2025 Mains exam will be held on August 10, 2025.

The IES 2025 notification was released on September 18, 2024. The Commission also released the IES 2025 application form with the official notification. UPSC IES/ESE 2026 Dates Announced

The UPSC IES (Preliminary) Exam 2026 notification and application will be announced on September 17, 2025 and the last date to apply will be October 7, 2025. The IES prelims exam 2026 will be conducted on February 8, 2026. On the other hand, UPSC IES 2026 Mains exam will be conducted on June 21, 2026.

What is IES Exam?

UPSC conducts the IES exam every year to recruit candidates for various specialised positions in the Union Government departments. The IES is a Central Civil Service and the candidates can be posted anywhere across the nation. The exam is conducted to recruit candidates for engineering positions for the various departments working under the Government of India. The Engineering Services Examination is conducted for four branches of engineering namely:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering

In the past, they had conducted this exam under the Indian Engineering Services (IES) exam. The IES exam is considered one of the toughest examinations in the country. Nearly, two lakh candidates appear for the examination every year. The Engineering Services Exam or IES exam recruits Group A and Group B officers for technical positions for the Government of India. The IES exam is a three-stage recruitment process - IES Preliminary, IES Main and Personality Test. Based on the merit of candidates in the IES exam, they are recommended to the Union Government for the posts. The nature of work for an engineering officer selected through the IES exam depends on the engineering branch and the cadre s/he is recruited.

The Union Public Service Commission conduct the IES prelims exam in offline mode. The Commission prepares the IES answer key and compare the answers of the candidates with it. With comparing, the Commission calculate the marks of the candidates by awarding 2 marks for each correct question and deducting 0.6 marks for each incorrect answer.

IES Exam Centre 2025

The UPSC ESE(IES) prelims and the main exam are conducted at the designated UPSC ESE (IES) 2025 exam centres. The list of UPSC IES exam centres is provided in the notification. It may be noted that the provision of the sealing of the seats will take place on the number of candidates allotted to each of the centres. The centres for which sealing will take place will exclude Delhi, Dispur, Kolkata and Nagpur.

UPSC will make allotment of ESE(IES) Exam Centres on first cum first serve basis. Applicants who are unable to occupy a seat in their choice of centre will be allotted a seat in the remaining vacant seats at other centres. IES Exam Eligibility Criteria 2025

It is mandatory for candidates to comply with the eligibility norms as prescribed by UPSC in order to appear for the Engineering Services Examination. The admissions at all three stages of the examination will be purely provisional and are subject to fulfilling the eligibility norms.

Candidates should be:

  • A citizen of India/ A subject of Nepal, Bhutan or Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962.
  • A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi and Ethiopia or Vietnam, intending to stay in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

Age Limit

Aspirants must have attained an age of 21 years and must not have attained an age of 30 years on January 1, 2025. Candidates should not be born earlier than January 2, 1995, and not later than January 1, 2004.

Physical Examination

Candidates must be physically fit for the admission to Engineering Service Examination as per the guidelines mentioned 

Educational Qualification

A candidate must possess:

  • Degree in Engineering from a recognised university
  • Passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India)

IES Exam Process

Step 1: IES Application Form 2025

  • The candidates filled out the IES application form 2025 online after registration. The forms were available online on the official website of UPSC
  • While filling up the form, candidates had to select the preferred venue for the test centre
  • After filling out the form, the candidates submitted the prescribed application fees as per their category

Step 2: Download IES Admit Card 2025

  • The IES admit card 2025 will be issued on the official website for downloads. The candidates will need their application number and date of birth to download the admit card
  • UPSC admit card is an important document having a variety of information. We suggest preserving the admit cards until the admission process is successfully conducted

Step 3: IES Preliminary Exam 2025

  • Students need to appear for IES 2025 preliminary entrance exam as per the schedule mentioned in the important date’s section
  • Aspirants are advised to reach the exam centre at least an hour before the commencement of the exam

Step 4: IES Prelims Result 2025

  • IES 2025 prelims result will be declared within a month of the prelims exam.
  • Candidates checked their IES preliminary results by simply submitting their application number and date of birth on the official website.
  • After the IES Result for prelims, the candidates filled IES Main Detailed Application Form(DAF) for the IES Main Exam.

Step 5: IES Main Exam 2025

  • Students who clear the IES preliminary examination will be allowed to appear for IES 2025 main exam. The UPSC ESE (IES) main 2025 was conducted on June 25.

Step 6: IES Main Result

  • UPSC will declare the IES main result in August (tentatively).

  • Candidates who clear the IES main exam will then be called for the interview round. This will be the final stage of the IES exam selection process.

Step 7: IES Interview

IES selection process comprises the Personal Interview round. Candidates who clear both IES pre and main examinations are only allowed to participate in the final interview round. Only those candidates who clear the personal interview round will be qualified for the recruitment process.

Step 8: IES Result

After the interviews, the final result will be declared by UPSC and the candidates will be recommended for appointment purposes. This will be the final process after which candidates will join the government offices as Executive engineers, mid-level managers or bureaucrats.

The Union Public Service Commissionwill release the Engineering Service Exam Notification 2026 on September 17, 2025. The Commission will provide around 20 days to fill out the IES applications. The Commission will conduct the IES 2026 prelims exam on February 8, 2026 as per the exam pattern and rules provided in the official exam pattern.

UPSC ESE IES 2023 admit card has been released online on June 5, exactly three weeks before the IES 2023 main exam date. The Commission will conduct the IES main exam (written) on June 25. The Commission released the IES main exam date in its official exam calendar released last year in May. The IES main exam 2023 will be conducted offline in pen and paper mode. IES Eligibility Criteria is set by the Union Public Service Commission each year. Engineering graduate or those in their final year can apply online. - Nationality: A Candidate must be either I. A citizen of India, or ii. A subject of Nepal, or iii. A subject of Bhutan, or iv. A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 01 January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or v. A Person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently setting in India. Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above shall be a person in whose favor a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India. -Age Limit: Candidates age should be between 21-30 years as on 01-08-2018.
