Naveen,
Yes, there is an option of choosing a college by yourself but the college you got is on the basis of closing rank. You can participate in the counselling and then fill the option of college according to your closing rank.

Rahul, in the current scenario both are equally beneficial. The new notification of Ministry of HRD demands 75% in 12th.
Another thing is that if your JEE rank is not very good or doesn't let you have admission in a good college, you can go for good private universities like Lovely Professional University, Jaypee University, BML Munjal University, etc.

Hello Karthik,
As per your marks, there are really low chances to get a good NIT. I think your rank will be around 1.5 lakhs-2.5 lakhs.
So even if you get admission in NIT it will not be a top one. You may get NIT-Agartala, Meghalaya, Sikkim, etc., they are not equal to top NITs like Trichy, Warangal, etc.
As the official cut-off ranks have not been released you may refer to the link below that gives you the closing and opening ranks for 2016 to check your possibility:
http://josaa.nic.in/Result2016/result/OpeningClosingRank.aspx
You have cleared JEE Mains so there are some chances for you to get admission in NIT.

Which board? If CBSE then your marks are low for IIT, NIT and IIIT. A minimum of 75% required for these for a CBSE board student.
