English Literature degree helps an individual to develop thinking skills and makes them more sensitive towards the world and society. A typical English Literature course comprises of literature from various era and countries and spans novels, plays, poems and essays. In the language part a student is required to learn comprehension, acquire basic knowledge of Rhetoric and Prosody, and nuances of writing.

The ideal duration for completion of BA in English Literature is minimum 3 years. Nowadays a lot of universities have adopted the semester system. In the semester system of the program, students have to appear in six semesters, wherein, two semesters comprise one year.

English Literature definitely has an edge over philosophy for sure. An English Literature or Philosophy degree qualifies you for any number of careers that have no specific skill set. Basically, it is a degree that assures potential. For instance, many people think you must have a degree to do job, but most entry-level jobs have such a steep learning curve that the need for a specific degree is obviated. Lots of English and Liberal Arts Major are doing jobs in marketing, communications, sales, etc.
All the Philosophy Majors, whom I know graduated in computer science. All the English majors who went to graduate school became lawyers or MBAs.
