Yes, NID Bangalore offers a regular MDes programme. The PG-level course lasts two and a half years. It is offered in five specialisations. For each specialisation, the institute offers 19 seats. Students can choose to pursue MDes in one of the following specialisations:

  • Universal Design
  • Digital Game Design
  • Information Design
  • Interaction Design
  • Design for Retail Experience

No, there is no provision for direct admission to the MDes programme of NID Bangalore. The admission to the programme is purely based on the applicants' merit in the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) conducted by NID. The test comprsies two stages: prelims and mains. Candidates shortlisted after the first stage qualify for the second stage. The final merit list is based on the applicants' performance in both the stages. Further, candidates seeking admission are required to satisfy the age and minimum qualification criteria.

The MDes tuition fee at NID Bangalore is INR 11.43 lakh for the entire course duration. It is payable over five semestral instalments. NID Bangalore has specified the minimum eligibility requirement to apply for its MDes programme. The eligibility criteria has two aspects. It specifies the minimum educational qualification and the age limit for admission. The following table depicts the two aspects of the NID Bangalore MDes eligibility criteria:

  • OBC-NCL/ SC/ ST - Candidates born on or after July 1, 1989, are eligible to apply
  • PwD - Candidates born on or after July 1, 1988, are eligible to apply
  • Foreign Nationals in Overseas Category (Supernumerary)- Candidates born on or after July 1, 1993, are eligible to apply

 

  • A four-year Bachelor's degree in any specialisation after Class 12/ equivalent exam, from a recognised institute or university (Candidates must have appeared for the Bachelor's degree exams before June 28, 2025);

Or

  • A four-year, full-time Diploma in Design/ Fine Arts/ Applied Arts/ Architecture after Class 12/ equivalent exam, from a recognised university or institute (Candidates must have appeared for the Diploma exams before June 28, 2025)

Or

  • A three-year Bachelor's degree in any specialisation after Class 12/ equivalent exam, from a recognised institute or university

Both NIFT Mumbai and the National Institute of Design Ahmedabad are good options to pursue a BDes. However, in terms of affordability, NIFT Mumbai is more affordable since the tuition fees to pursue a BDes at NIFT Mumbai range from INR 5.6 Lacs to INR 12.3 lakh, and the tuition fee to pursue a BDes at NID Ahmedabad is INR 16.84 lakh.

To know which is a better choice, students must weigh both options based on important factors such as fees and ratings. As per official sources, the fees to pursue BDes at NIFT Mumbai range from is INR 5.6 Lacs to INR 12.3 lakh. The fees to pursue BDes from the National Institute of Design Ahmedabad is INR 16.84 lakh. In terms of fees, NIFT Mumbai is a better choice.

Moreover, as per Shiksha ratings, BDes at NIFT Mumbai and the National Institute of Design Ahmedabad have been rated 3.8 out of 5 and 3.9 out of 5, respectively. In terms of rating, a BDes from the National Institute of Design Ahmedabad is a better choice.

For the NID DAT Prelims, expected cutoffs usually range from 50-55 for General to 30-35 for PwD. For NID DAT Mains, expected cutoffs are generally higher, with General at 55-60 and PwD at 35-40. Through the DAT prelims scores, the candidates are shortlisted for the Mains.
