According to the NIFT Examination and Evaluation Policy, you can attend the 3rd semester if you have failed in one course in the 2nd semester. As per the guidelines, students are allowed to appear for follow-up in a maximum of two subjects in a single semester. You have to repeat the semester if you fail in three or more subjects in one semester. You can get further clarification from the examination department. However, failing in one course will not hamper your progress in the next semester if you pass the follow-up exam.

No, you don't need to necessarily take coaching to crack NIFT and NID exams. It can be done based on self-study. For that, you need to take notes on a few points. Create a timetable and get stick to it. Follow NIFT and NID prescribed entrance books for your preparation. Try to practice sketching every day and taking inspiration from the real life environment around you. Keep browsing through newspapers and the latest magazines as much as you can. Try to be creative. Practice previous year's papers. Also, practice on A4 size sketchbooks and not in A3 as it is the standard size of the answer sheet provided in the examination.
