No, you can't "fail" the PTE exam, but you can fail to achieve your target score from the institution you're applying to. Note that there is no universal "pass" or "fail" mark for the PTE Academic test.

Universities and immigration bodies will consider your best overall score from a single sitting that meets all their specific criteria (including sectional cut-offs).
You can choose to share only your best scores if you have taken multiple attempts of the PTE esam. Your university or visa offices cannot view the scores from your other attempts (except from the ones that you share).

You need to balance on both speed and accuracy, but accuracy usually comes first, especially for content-based questions in the PTE exam.
- Accuracy: Without accuracy, speed is useless. Incorrect answers written fast or even in full length don't get any marks.
- Speed: PTE is highly timed exam. You must learn to work quickly and efficiently. Hence, the ideal approach is to practice until you can achieve accuracy within the time limits for each question type.

Here are some of the common PTE exam challenges that the students may face while trying to meet the desired cut-offs:
- Strict Sectional Cut-offs: Many universities and immigration bodies have not just an overall PTE score requirement but also minimum scores for each section (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing). The PTE-A exam fees in Canada in 2025-26 is $350 CAD. The fees of PTE Core exam in Canada is also the same at $350 CAD. However, the PTE exams A1, A2 and B1 cost $295 CAD.

Test takers are going to observe some major changes in their PTE exams, starting from 07 Aug 2025. These changes include -
- Addition of 2 new question types as task 7 and task 8 in Part 1 - Speaking and Writing of the PTE Exam. These questions are:
- Summarize Group Discussion, and
- Respond to a Situation
- Changes in the names of some tasks in Part 2 - Reading and Part 3 - Listening. The tasks that have been renamed are:

As per the exam consucting bosy, Pearson PTE, the overall length of the PTE exam will continue to remain the same, i.e. 2 hours. This will be done by adjusting the length of other tasks in the PTE exam accordingly. It must be noted that the changes to the PTE exam pattern will in effect from 07 August 2025.
