Mechanical engineering is a core and evergreen branch. Almost all core industries and manufacturing units makes use of machines. Thus, for functioning and maintenance of machines, qualified mechanical engineers are needed by such Industries.
The point is- there are ample amounts of job opportunities for B.E./B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering graduates in Government as well as Private sector. When it comes to Government sector, organisations and departments like- Indian Railways, DRDO, Indian Armed Forces, BHEL, PWD, NHAI, State Wise Road Transport boards etc recruits Mechanical Engineers.
Private sector offers even more job opportunities. S

There are just about 1000 seats while your rank is almost 12K. I feel it's quite difficult for you to get admission there. But, you must go through the process of counselling.

No. The cut-off for mechanical engineering in NIT, Durgapur is very high.
NIT Durgapur is famous for its mechanical branch,so every year cutoff is high.
At this rank, it is difficult to grab mechanical in NIT, Durgapur.

Yes, you can as the closing rank for SRM University for mechanical engineering is 70000, according to this, your rank is less so you must take part in the counseling process and get selected.

Hello,
Yes, you can go through mechanical engineering as it is evergreen engineering branch whose scope never ends and it is one of the best core branches of engineering.
There are many colleges for ME such as BITS Pilani, BIT, Thapar, PEC University KIIT University and some other apart from IIT and NITs.

If you have an honest interest in mechanical then go for it, otherwise, don't waste your four years in mechanical, you might end up cursing yourself as it might be evergreen, but if done from an average college and you are an average student, you might end up with 15K salary.
Nowadays, CSE is the preferred branch as we are moving towards computerized and digitized world even EE and civil would be the nice choices.
