Yes, you can apply for a PhD in Neuroscience at IISc after completing an M.Sc in Zoology and clearing NET JRF in Zoology. While a Zoology M.Sc. can qualify you to apply, always carefully review the eligibility criteria for the specific neuroscience PhD programme you are interested in at IISc, as they may have additional requirements or preferred areas of focus. As you have a strong base in biology, sciences will help you to perform the best in neuroscience research.

While the NEST exam is mostly for integrated MSc courses of institutions like NISER and UM-DAE CEBS, it will not be the best option for those who would like to have a Ph.D. programme pursuing theoretical quantum physics.

Alternatively, appear for tests like the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) or the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), which are more appropriate for Ph.D. admissions in physics. The tests are a measure of candidates' readiness for advanced-level research and are accepted by a large majority of universities awarding Ph.D. degrees in physics, such as theoretical quantum physics.
