You could approach an industry, or an automobile company to be precise and learn a lot more from them than you will in college. These automobile companies have their own institutes which train you really well.

It is safer to do B.Tech in m echanical than going for automobile and it is better to learn more about automobile engineering along with your mechanical degree. Basically, 85% of syllabus content is same.
B.Tech in automobile is not enough for entering the industry and there are very few job openings for B.Tech auto pass outs. Campus placements are also very few.
It is waste spending time at service centers after B.Tech in automobile, it is not going to help you enter the industry.

Who said MAE is not considered as a B.Tech degree. If is it so, then colleges should have shut down this branch.
However, your thinking about MAE is right because nowadays, there are a number of specializations offered in B.Tech. Unfortunately, there isn't any materialisation of the same.
