No, DM is not equivalent to a PhD. These are two types of PG courses in Medicine and health sciences with different points of focus and purpose.

DM is clinical and focused in orientation with the focus being on the care of patients and practice of medicine.

But PhD is focused towards research and contributes to the body of knowledge in science.

DM course involves deeper and advanced study and research in a focused area of medicine after completing a MD or similar course.

Here are some steps to think about -

  • DM in Cardiology

  • DM in Endocrinology

  • DM Gastroenterology

MD course is a professional degree given to students who go to medical school and practice medicine. The duration is 4 years.

But a DM is a higher degree in medicine - superspecialization and expertise in a subject.

Any doctor having an MD degree is fit to pursue a Doctor of Medicine degree. The academic merit of the students is strictly considered for selection into this DM in Medical.

Candidates can see a general outline of the DM course eligibility below - 

  • MD or DNB in the relevant speciality.
  • National Medical Commission or equivalent authority-approved degree.
  • No specific age limit.
  • A compulsory rotatory internship is mandatory during the MBBS phase.

DM is a super-specialist doctor.

After finishing MBBS and MD some doctors choose to go for for an additional 3 years to become an expert in one focused area like -

  • heart diseases (Cardiology)
  • brain diseases (Neurology)
  • cancer (Oncology)

These doctors then choose DM course in a focused area.
