2010 Commonwealth Games could be your chance
An industry insider looks at the opportunities in sports commentary.
“Talent hunt shows should be organised for the selection of sports commentators to woo talented people” says Charu Sharma.
Do you think there will be a demand for sports commentators during the Commonwealth Games 2010? If yes, would 2010 spell good news for aspiring sports commentators?
If Doordarshan is involved in a big way, then many commentators are likely to get work during the games — but what opportunities those commentators get after the 2010 games remains the bugbear. I believe DD has a very good platform to offer to commentators because of the coverage it gives to diverse games. There can be lot more professionalism in this field which is amiss as of now in terms of money and selection.
Can anyone (doctors, engineers and CAs) hope to become commentators purely on merit, without having played at all?
Chances are very few as there aren’t any entry-level-auditions organised by sports channels or radio stations. If this starts happening, things can improve.
Should talent hunt shows like Harsha Ki Khoj be organised more often to find young and fresh faces/voices?
Certainly. They should be organised to encourage more young, vibrant, professional and capable commentators. I wish this
Millions of youngsters wish to become cricketers. When they don’t get a chance to make it big, they sometimes want to become commentators. What’s the advice you would give them?
Yes, many aim for that. But to work as a professional commentator, one should do proper homework and improve one’s communication skills. Merely becoming a sportsperson doesn’t make you a good commentator.
