The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed National Institute of Fashion Technology to hold semester-end exams for two students punished due to low attendance.

Both students -- Ritika Jain and Gargi Maheshwari, 3rd semester students in Fashion Management -- pleaded they were often late for classes due to regular traffic jams.

Jain stays in Ashok Vihar in North Delhi and Maheshwari is a resident of Modi Nagar.

Jain had an overall attendance of 78 per cent but was short in two subjects with 55 percent and 58 percent respectively.

Maheswari had overall atten- dance of 79% and was short in Fashion Marketing with 61%.

The college authorities turned down their request to waive off the deficit, forcing them to move court.

The institute prescribed an overall attendance of 75% and 65 % in each subject.

Gagan Chhabra, lawyer for both students, told the court that on many occasions they were only 10 to 15 minutes late and though they were allowed to attend classes, their atten- dance was not marked. "They were late due to reasons beyond their control," he argued.

Chhabra said the institute has last year allowed Rishika Jairath, a third-sem student, to take re-examination though she had 58% attendance in the core subject against required 65%.

Staying in Gurgaon, she too had cited traffic congestion for being late to classes.

"The position of these two students are in no way dissim- ilar to Jairath," noted Justice Kailash Gambhir, asking NIFT to hold exams for Jain and Maheshwari within 20 days.
