CBSE New Curriculum: Central Board of Secondary Education has released its new school curriculum, bringing a major change in language learning. From 2026-27 academic session, students in Class 6 will have to study a third language. This follows National Education Policy 2020, which recommends that students learn three languages up to Class 10 instead of current two-language system.

CBSE Third LanguageΒ

As per media updates, CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh clarified that third language will not be compulsory in class 9 right now. However, students who start learning it in class 6 this year will reach class 10 in 2031. By then, CBSE three-language system will be implemented, and the third language is expected to become a mandatory subject in class 10 board exams.Β

Under new system, students must study at least two Indian languages. Also, only one foreign language will be allowed, and English will now be treated as a foreign language. This means students may not be able to choose both English and another foreign language in their CBSE board exams.

Apart from languages, CBSE is also making art education, vocational education, and physical education compulsory in Classes 9 and 10. Vocational education will include a board or annual exam from 2027-28, while art and physical education will continue to be assessed internally.

Another change is that Maths and Science will be offered at two levels (standard and advanced) from Class 9. Students can choose advanced level for extra learning and marks, but it will not negatively affect their CBSE results if they do not pass it.

CBSE is also expanding language options. From this session, students can choose regional languages like Dogri, Maithili, Konkani, and Santhali, completing list of all 22 scheduled Indian languages offered by Board.Β
