547 MBBS seats went vacant in past two years: Union Health Minister
Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Health Minister has recently said in the Rajya Sabha that a total of 547 MBBS seats went vacant in the last two academic years.
The minister said this while replying to a question on the vacant MBBS seats in the last two years. He was also asked whether it has happened before, or is it for the first time. The minister was asked questions on the fees that whether the fees are reasonable and what are the steps the central government took for regulating the medical colleges' fees in India.
The union health minister said, "As per the provisions of the Regulations on Graduate Medical Education and Post Graduate Medical Education, the Common Counseling for admission to Central Education Institutions, All India Quota seats in Government Medical Colleges and Deemed Universities is conducted by the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. Similarly, for admission to the State Quota seats in Government Medical College and all the seats in private medical colleges, the respective state governments conduct common counselling."
The union health minister revealed that Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh tops the list when it comes to the vacant seats. In Madhya Pradesh, a total of 149 MBBS seats remained vacant in the year 2018-2019. In Jharkhand, 114 MBBS seats remained vacant during the academic session of 2019-2020. The total number of vacant seats in 2018 - 2019 was 274 and in the academic year 2019-2020, it was 273.
