Delhi High Court has said that it is high time to stop the backdoor entries to the medical colleges.

Delhi High Court has said while dealing with a petition of five students who were studying at a medical college without going through the NEET (National Eligibility Entrance Test) based counselling process that it is high time that such backdoor entries to the medical colleges must be stopped as lakhs of students work hard to get the admission to the medical educational institutions based on the merit.

The court has dismissed a plea by these five students who got admission to LN Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Bhopal, in 2016, without undergoing the centralised NEET counselling conducted by the Department of Medical Education (DME).

The petitioners' counsel asked for leniency on the basis that the NEET scores of these students were higher than that of the others who were granted admission through the DME's counselling. However, the court said that if the college had sent the details of the vacant seats to the DME on time, the seats could have been filled on the basis of further counselling by DME.

As per the Supreme Court, admissions to the private and government medical colleges in India needs to be carried out through NEET, followed by the centralised counselling by DME.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) had issued letters of discharge regarding these five petitioners in 2017 but neither the students nor the college paid any attention to these letters and kept attending college, appeared for the exams and got promoted as well. Finally, these students filed a petition to quash MCI's discharge communications, which the court dismissed twice.

The Delhi High Court said, β€œIt is high time that such backdoor entries in educational institutions, including medical colleges, should stop. Lakhs of students all over the country work hard and toil to secure admissions to educational institutions on the basis of their merit. To permit any backdoor entry to any educational institution would be grossly unfair to those who are denied admission, despite being more meritorious, on account of the seats being taken and blocked by such backdoor entrants," as reported by India today.
