Maharashtra's GMCs teachers call off strike for one month
After Minister of medical education Amit Deshmukh assured the teachers of government medical colleges in Maharashtra that their issues will be resolved in one month, the teachers have decided to wait for one month before they again start protesting.
In a relief to scores of UG and PG medical students, medical officers including doctors of 18 state-run hospitals in Maharashtra have called off their strike after the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) gave them written assurances that their demands will be met within one month.
More than a month ago, these teachers had stopped conducting academic lectures of postgraduate (MD/MS) and undergraduate (MBBS) students in their colleges. Recently, they also withdrew the patient care services in government hospitals.
Doctors got written assurance from Amit Deshmukh
After rounds of discussions were held with the medical education minister Amit Deshmukh, finally, the minister gave the doctors written assurances that their issues will be resolved in a month.
Dr Samir Golawar, Maharashtra State Medical Teachers Association (MSMTA) general secretary said, “We have decided to conduct academic classes of PG and UG students, as well as join patient care from March 18. A major demand of time-bound promotions of temporary medical teachers has been positively accepted,” as reported by TOI.
The state government has agreed to consider the temporary teachers on priority while making on-contract time-bound appointments of teachers in different GMCs.
In this regard, a special meeting will be held with Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to decide how to make temporary teachers permanent in a time-bound manner. A proposal to implement the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) for medical teachers will be tabled for cabinet approval as early as possible.
