PG medical students to continue as resident doctors till new batches join: NMC
NMC has issued an official notification, directing medical colleges and institutes to utilise the service of PG students as resident doctors till the new batch joins. The directive has been issued amid huge rush of corona patients in hospitals.
The National Medical Commission has issued a circular, asking medical colleges and institutions to continue to utilise the services of final-year postgraduate students as resident doctors till new batch of students arrives. The new directive has been issued to ensure the availability of a sufficient number of doctors in hospitals to take care of the increasing number of COVID-19 patients. Due to corona, admission into postgraduate courses in medical colleges has been delayed.
NEET-PG 2021 which was scheduled to be held on April 18 has been postponed till further notice. The final year examination of postgraduate courses has been delayed in many colleges as well. “In view of the circumstance, in order to ensure that there is no shortage of Residents in handling the surge of COVID-19 cases, the services of these postgraduate students as Residents may be continued to be utilized until fresh batches of postgraduate students have joined," NMC said in its official notification.
Students of most PG colleges were roped in last year when COVID-19 cases were on the rise. They were called in to augment the workforce. The new directives seek to ensure that the current batch continues to serve as resident doctors till the new batch of students joins.
All medical institutions including central, state, UT, government institutions or private institutions to continue providing the final year students with accommodation and payment of stipend during the extended period, the notification said.
As per NMC, there are 75,236 postgraduate students, 26,969 senior residents, 19,998 non-PG junior residents and 7,748 PG students in super speciality studies in India. Medical colleges in the state, tertiary care centers, are facing a shortage of doctors due to the huge influx of corona patients.
