“We have not received any reports of any hostage situation regarding any student,” MEA has said.
The government has clarified that there are no reports of a hostage situation in Ukraine in which Indian nationals have been taken hostage and being used as a human shield.
On the seventh day of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, Russia Wednesday claimed that its military was doing everything possible to ensure the safe removal of Indians from the “war zone”. It also alleged that the Ukrainians were holding a group of Indian students hostage to use them as a human shield.
In response to media queries regarding reports of Indian students being held hostage in Ukraine, the Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs Arindam Bagchi said: “Our Embassy in Ukraine is in continuous touch with Indian nationals in Ukraine. We note that with the cooperation of the Ukrainian authorities, many students have left Kharkiv yesterday. We have not received any reports of any hostage situation regarding any student.”
He also stated that the Indian Government has requested special trains to evacuate Indians from Kharkiv. “We have requested the support of the Ukrainian authorities in arranging special trains for taking out students from Kharkiv and neighbouring areas to the western part of the country,” Bagchi said in a statement.
As per reports, at present, around three thousand Indians are left in Ukraine. Till now 17,000 Indians have left Ukraine of these, 3352 have come to India through special flights. The rest are being brought through 15 flights in the next 24 hours.
Bagchi added: “We have been coordinating effectively with the countries in the region including Russia, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova. A large number of Indian nationals have been evacuated from Ukraine in the last few days. We appreciate the help extended by the Ukrainian authorities to make this possible. We thank Ukraine's western neighbours in receiving Indian nationals and for accommodating them while they waited for flights to take them back home.”
