The Supreme Court will hear a plea on vacant PG medical seats. The petition also demands five-year vacant seat data to create a system for preventing unfilled seats in pre-clinical and para-clinical courses.

SC Hearing on PG medical Seats

The Supreme Court of India will hear a plea on the ongoing issue of thousands of vacant postgraduate (PG) medical seats annually. The petition will be heard in order to ensure seat utilisation and prevent the wastage of educational resources. Further, the petition also demands data for vacant seats in the last 5 years. The matter will be heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and N V Anjaria.

The plea also requests the National Medical Commission (NMC) to submit comprehensive five-year data mentioning the exact number of unfilled seats across various courses and institutions. The issue concerns a large community of students in India. Students across the country search for several information, including "vacant PG medical seats Supreme Court," "NMC vacant seats data," and "seat matrix of PG medical courses in India."

The petition shows concerns of students about the vacant seats in the MD/ MS courses, which are important for medical education and public health services, as reported by India Today.

In a similar context, a separate plea in January was heard by the court this year. The court had mentioned that seats in medical courses shall not remain vacant, and that steps must be taken to stop such wastage of resources and training opportunities.
