Telangana: Senior resident doctors end strike after assurance from government

As many as 698 senior doctors have been on strike in Telangana over the non-clearance of payment for months. Now, after written assurance from Health Minister T Harish Rao to meet their demands, the doctors have called off their strike.

The statement by TSRDA (Telangana Senior Resident Doctors Association) reads, "With all the demands being considered by the government positively in due interest of the public health care, TSRDA (Telangana Senior Resident Doctors Association) is calling off the ongoing strike with immediate effect," as reported by Edexlive.

The health minister has given the assurance that their May 2021 stipend will be credited as per the attendance received from respective colleges and the pending stipends will be credited in a week.

Other assurances from the government

Due to a shortage of resident doctors in the state, PG students joined as Senior Residents in February and March 2021 following government instructions. The Director of Medical Education (DME) has assured the doctors that they will be given 12 months of valid senior residency certificate from the date of their joining the senior residency. Moreover, they will be considered for the regular recruitments for Telangana Assistant professors.

The background

These doctors were not paid the stipends from four to seven months, and hence they were demanding immediate clearance of payment. To protest against the same, senior resident doctors from Osmania Medical College, Gandhi Hospital, Mahabubnagar Government Medical Hospital, Institute of Mental Health, Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, and many other government colleges across the state boycotted elective duties and then emergency duties from July 1.
