DU ADMISSIONS 2020: The University of Delhi has started its online admission process for the academic year 2020-21. This year, due to coronavirus outbreak in the country, the varsity has decided to not have sports and Extracurricular Activities (ECA) trials. However, as per reports, University might revoke its decision to not have admissions in ECA category. This year, in wake of coronavirus pandemic, the varsity is not conducting the ECA trials, except those who have NCC and NSS certificates. While DU Admissions 2020 under the sports category will be granted based on merit certificates.

The sports quota has 27 disciplines including archery, athletics, swimming, cricket, football, badminton, hockey, wrestling, tennis, judo, and basketball, etc. Under ECA category, there are 14 recognised activities – dance, debate, fine arts, music, creative writing, music instrumental including tabla, sitar, dholak, drums, harmonium, guitar, and sarod; theatre, NCC, NSS, and yoga, among others.

Several artists like Birju Maharaj, Geeta Chandran had petitioned the vice-president, the chancellor of the varsity, to reconsider the decision.

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu had then directed the Delhi University authorities to retain the procedure for admission under the Extra-Curricular Activities quota by earmarking seats for talented artists.

During a meeting of the Standing Committee on Admissions, it was proposed that the admissions under the ECA category should begin on the basis of certificates only by excluding trials.

However, Arun Attree, a member of the standing committee, while objecting the proposal said that there is no way to authenticate the credibility of the ECA certificates as it is not issued by any government-approved institutions. He further said that "this will be an injustice to the genuine candidates. And if the physical trials can not be done, then the varsity should consider doing online trials."

According to officials, the varsity will revisit the guidelines after the approval of the higher authorities.

"After the approval of the higher authorities, we will revisit. The ECA admissions will happen only on the basis of ECA certificates. However, their verification is a big challenge. The sub-committee will give out stricter guidelines since the ECA trials won't be possible. The chancellor had requested the vice-chancellor to reconsider the decisions," said Shobha Bagai, Dean (admissions), DU, a media house reported.

The University of Delhi is expected to come out with new guidelines soon. The last date to apply for DU Admissions 2020 is July 31. The guidelines are expected to come before that, so that students can apply. Hitherto, the University of Delhi conducted DU admission offline, however, this year the whole process will be conducted and completed online owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
