EC has highest share among 10 lakh+ registrations, says GATE 2014 Chairman

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) 2014 is all set to commence from Feb 1, 2014 and will continue till March 2. The results for Gate 2014 are expected to be declared on March 28, 2013.

However, in the last few days, shiksha.com received a bunch of requests from GATE 2014 aspirants asking about the number of students appearing for the exam this year. Thus, to aid these requests, shiksha.com caught up with Prof GP Rajashekhar, GATE 2014 Chairman, to get some candid last minute information for aspirants taking the exam this year.

Besides owning a Ph.D from Hyderabad University, Prof Rajasekhar is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at IIT Kharagpur.

Q. GATE 2014 begins Feb 1. How many students have registered for the exam? Has the registrations gone up by a marginal number this year?

A.

This year, around 10.34 lakh students will be appearing for the exam this year. Well, we can’t really comment on GATE 2014 registrations going up this year. The exact data is not available yet as the compilation is still under process.

Q. GATE will be completely online this year. Should students be prepared for any glitches?

A.

No. I don’t think so. Infact, in the year 2013, the exam was conducted online for a few subjects but not all of them.  Moreover, there are exams like JEE Mains etc which are completely online. So, I don’t think the exam being conducted online is a problem at all. There are no glitches as such expected.

Q. Is GATE acquiring popularity now?

A.

Yes. Definitely. GATE is becoming popular amongst students. The way this exam is handled and conducted has made it a standard exam.

Q. Which stream/subject this year has the highest number of applicants?

A.

This year, I think and probably, EC (Electronics and communications engineering) has the highest number of applicants in GATE 2014.

Q. Any changes expected in GATE in the coming future?

A.

I really can’t comment on this at the moment. And if any changes will be made, it will be up there in the brochures. In fact, the brochures will provide you much information.

Q. Any last minute tips or suggestions for GATE 2014 aspirants?

A.

Not really. But I would like to wish them Best of Luck for the exam.
