GATE entrance exam 2014
A national level examination, GATE tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in Engineering and Technology. Based on the score acquired in the exam, students get admission to post-graduate engineering programmes in higher education institutes across India with financial assistance provided by MHRD and other Government agencies. The score may also used by Public sector units for employment screening purposes.
GATE 2014 is being conducted by IIT Kharagpur.
What’s new in GATE 2014?
- GATE 2014 will encompass a newly added paper "Ecology and Evolution" that takes the total number of papers in GATE to a total of 22. All the papers will be conducted by an ONLINE Computer Based Test (CBT).
- The online examination paper will contain some questions for which numerical answers must be keyed in by the candidate using the virtual keypad. Rest of the questions shall be of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) type.

*Certificate from Principal: This means students need to acquire a signature from their principal on a certificate that will be printed on the application PDF file provided only after completion of online application submission. Therefore, this cannot be scanned and uploaded online.
Candidates with backlogs: Candidates who have appeared in the final semester/year exam in 2013, but with a backlog (arrears/failed subjects) in any of the papers in their qualifying degree should submit:
- A copy of any one of the marks sheets of the final year, OR
- A letter from the principal indicating that the student has a backlog from an earlier semester/year to be cleared, and therefore cannot produce a course completion certificate now. This certificate will also be present in the last portion of the PDF application form provided to students after they submit application online.
Exam schedule:
The exam will be held during forenoon and afternoon on alternate weekends (Saturday and Sunday) between February 1, 2014 and March 2, 2014. However, exams for some of the papers in GATE 2014 will be held in multiple sessions.
Structure of GATE 2014:
Going by last year’s paper GATE 2014 question paper would encompass MCQs and numerical answer type questions. For multiple choice type questions, candidates will be required to choose the answer from the given choices and for numerical answer type questions, choices will not be given. Candidates have to enter a number as the answer using a virtual keypad.
This three hour paper will comprise of 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.

Application Process:
- Similar to the year 2013, for GATE 2014, all candidates can get related information via a single GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS).
- Candidates have to register and fill the application via ONLINE mode only by accessing any of the zonal GATE websites of IISc and seven IITs.
- Candidates must upload his/her photograph and signature during online application.
- The application process is complete only when a print out of the filled ONLINE application with the candidate’s signature and a good quality photograph affixed in the appropriate place is received by the respective GATE offices along with necessary documents, if any, on or before the last date. Please note that application forms are not available for sale anywhere else.
Downloadable Admit Card:
- Admit cards will NOT be sent by e-mail/post.
- Admit cards can ONLY be downloaded from the zonal GATE websites from December 18, 2013.
- The candidate has to bring the printed admit card to the test center along with at least one original (not photocopied / scanned copy) and valid (not expired) photo identification.
- One of these photo identifications is ONLY permitted: Driving license, Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, Aadhaar UID, College ID, Employee identification card, or a notarized affidavit with Photo, Signature, Date of Birth and Residential Address. The details of this ID proof have to be given while filling the online application.

- Last Date for Request for Change in the Choice of City: November 20, 2013
