The Supreme Court has passed an order allowing B-schools to consider students who have taken any of the six MBA entrance exams – CAT, MAT, XAT, ATMA, CMAT and GMAT – for admission to PGDM programs.

In the order, passed on February 18, 2013, the SC permitted the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to substitute the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) with the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) for admission into PGDM programs, from 2013-14 onwards.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had passed a judgment (on March 1, 2012) permitting PGDM institutes to continue using CMAT along with five other nationally recognised tests like CAT, XAT, MAT, ATMA, and JMET for admissions.

Now, JMET has been replaced by GMAT since the former was discontinued in 2011. This order has provided much needed relief to the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), which owns the GMAT exam. Though accepted by more than 5,000 business schools worldwide, only top few institutes accept GMAT scores in India.
