As a relief for students who are not in the Top 20 percentile of their respective boards this year, HRD offers them another chance to score better at Class XII board exams next year.

One of the important and most-debated clauses in the new JEE format to be introduced next year is that only students within the Top 20 percentile in their respective boards can appear for the Advanced JEE exam.

Realising that the new criterion may not be fair to students who have already appeared for Class XII board exams this year, HRD ministry has allowed IIT aspirants a chance to appear for board exams again next year and improve their board marks. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the state boards would make special arrangements to implement the decision.

According to the clause, only top 1.5 lakh students who will clear JEE Main will be eligible to sit for Advanced JEE 2013 (entrance exam for IITs) if they are within Top 20 percentile of their board exams. However, not all 1.5 lakh students will be from the open category. These will include students from all categories, such as SC, ST and OBC.

The reservation category matrices for JEE 2013 is still not clear though. Until now, IITs allow 15% reservation for SC, 7.5% for ST, and 27% for OBC candidates. It is not clear yet whether the same will be extended to the new common entrance test or not. Know more
