With lowering of cut-off scores to 35%, it is expected that more than 25,000 students will make it to the admission eligibility list of the premier institutes, which is double the number in 2011. Consequently, up to two candidates will be vying for each seat in the general category while three candidates will be vying for each reserved category seat at the counselling level. Only students who will pay up the initial admission fee (Rs 40,000 for general category students and Rs 20,000 for OBCs) will be eligible for counselling. Students who do not get admission in the course of their choice will either have to forfeit the admission fee or opt for the course that is offered to them.

Obtaining a rank in IIT JEE 2012 does not guarantee you a seat in IITs. The admission is granted on the basis of All India rank, category rank, and choice of qualified student at the time of counselling.

Candidates, who have not been able to crack IIT JEE 2012, can opt for other engineering entrance exams to be held this year.
