NEP 2020: Sikkim state government decided to set up an Education Reform Commission to draw a comprehensive policy keeping in mind the new National Education Policy. Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang made the announcement regarding the same on the occasion of the Independence Day celebration. On the occasion of the 74th Independence Day celebration after hoisting the National Flag at Manan Bhawan the Chief Minister praised the new National Education Policy approved by the Central Government. The minister also stated that the NEP provides an overarching vision and comprehensive framework for the school and higher education sector students. Along with forming a Sikkim Education Reform Commission, the government also planned on setting up one model school in each district with innovative teaching and learning methodologies. 

The Independence Day celebration was conducted by following the social distancing reforms and other health measures to be followed. The chief minister also paid tributes to the 20 Army Personnel killed in the clashes with the Chinese forces in eastern Ladakh in June 2020 on the occasion of Independence Day. The chief minister on the occasion also added that the Panchayati Raj Institution (PRIs) in Sikkim will be depoliticized and its representatives will be free from any party affiliations.

Following the slogans by the Prime Minister for a self-reliant India, the Sikkim Chief Minister said that the state government will work on making the state Atma Nirbhar and encourage the people to consume locally produced items. 

The Union Cabinet on July 29 approved the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), five years after the first committee to draft it was constituted. The cabinet also approved the proposal to change the name of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to the Ministry of Education. The draft proposes a restructuring of higher education into three categories of institutions that conduct research, teach and degree-granting colleges.
