Coronavirus: Delhi school students develop robot to help medical workers

Amid the nationwide lockdown to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, good news has come from Delhi’s Pitampura region. Students of KIIT World School Pitampura have developed a robot that would prove helpful to evade the spread of coronavirus among medical professionals. Nishant Chandna and Saurav Maheshar, two 12^th class students of the school have designed a robot named Prithvi. It has been designed with an aim to reduce contact between COVID-19 patients and healthcare workers. All sorts of conceptualisation and designing was done after the PM declared a countrywide lockdown to contain the spread of the virus.  

Modus Operandi of the robot

According to Nishant Chandna, a number of medical staff including doctors and nurses in India were infected while treating patients. They wanted to design something that would help protect those at the frontline battling this illness. The robot has been designed to provide food and medicine to patients. It is controlled remotely through an app that can be downloaded on a Smartphone. Apart from this, a smart tablet can also be joined with the robot. This helps in video conferencing between doctors and patients. They are also envisaging to add an additional feature, in the form of a temperature gun. In this way, patients can check their own temperature, curtailing the risk to doctors and nurses.

The prototype of Prithvi’ is made of cardboard, a programmable board, and basic motors. It will cost less than Rs 5,000 to create the robot. However, in case of getting made on a mass scale, there will be a need for a stronger build.
