AICTE will not ban new engineering colleges
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will not ban new engineering colleges as requested by the state governments. The state governments had earlier sent a plea to AICTE that it should temporarily ban new engineering colleges as there are thousands of seats lying vacant in existing engineering colleges. Fresh approvals of new engineering colleges might only aggravate the situation.
However, AICTE has turned down their plea as they thought that the demand was inappropriate and is only meant to promote the monopoly of the existing institutes. According to the AICTE, if an engineering college fulfills the required conditions, it will not be stopped. The introduction of new engineering colleges will add competition to the market ensuring that colleges that do not provide quality education to fade out automatically.
AICTE further added that quality engineering institutes will always be in demand and will never face student crunch. It suggested that states should do an analysis of the supply-demand ratio of students and seats.
