Are students losing interest in engineering?
Over 6,000 students, who have cleared their supplementary board exams, registered themselves for engineering and pharmacy courses in the state of Gujarat, reported the Times of India.
A second merit list will be published next week for these students. Even though admissions were granted on the basis of the first merit list, 13,175 seats in the two streams are still lying vacant.
After the announcement of the supplementary exam last Tuesday, the admission committee extended the last date of registration to August 10. The engineering stream has 9833 vacant seats (299 in auto engineering, 133 in chemical, 829 in civil, 2,302 in computer, 3,424 in electronics and communication, 1,045 in Information Technology and 262 in mechanical stream) whereas a total of 3,642 seats are vacant in the pharmacy stream. In Bhopal, the declined admission rate in IT sector is affecting the overall enrollment in engineering colleges. With colleges failing to stimulate students for IT stream, only 3,000 students have shown interest in IT branch in the choice filling process. Among the various streams of engineering, mechanical engineering comes out as the most attractive branch with almost 11,000 students opting for it now. Computer science comes second with 7,806 students enrolling for it in the first round. The second round of counseling will start on August 8. (Read more)
In the last one year, nearly 30% of the engineering colleges have either shut down or approached All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to close down the IT branch in their institutes due to the declining admission rate in IT branch. Out of the 106 engineering colleges in Bhopal, 70% of them had IT branch.
Don’t choose branch based on misconception
Nevertheless, owners of engineering colleges felt that students should not make their choice based on sketchy information. BS Yadav, secretary of Association of Professional and Technical Education told TOI that students have been filling the choices, without having thorough information, based on today's market scenario which can affect their career in the long run. According to Yadav, approximately 20% of mechanical engg graduates were recruited by IT companies this year. He feels that Bachelor of Engineering (BE) is a four year long programme, during which the scenario can change any point. (Read more)
