DTU students taking on new heights

Students of Delhi Technological University are on the seventh heaven, and why not! Last week saw the inauguration of one of the prestigious projects of the varsity – Aarush X1. An Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), Aarush X1 was unveiled by Padma Shri Dr V K Saraswat, scientific advisor to the ministry of defence, and director general, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
What is exciting about this launch is the fact that the students of DTU could achieve this feat in the aerospace segment without really having any formal training in it. “The varsity doesn’t have a department in aerospace, but it did not deter us in our endeavour of creating Aarush X1. The UAS could see the light of day only because of our hardwork and the continued support of our faculty members along with the guidance of Lockheed Martin officials,” says Jayant Malani, a fourth-year BTech student.
The UAS was developed over phases; the different phases of the UAS development have been carried out by multiple generations of students, not just the ones who started it. As one batch graduated, the new members (who were recruited via a testing procedure), took charge from them and carried the work forward.
Dr Saraswat’s encouraging remarks left students wanting for more. He said, “Such innovations must lead to a culture and must encourage budding engineers to learn from this experience and create newer technologies. It is very important for us to build an innovation ambience which can assist in these creations.”
Prof PB Sharma, vice chancellor, Delhi Technological University, appreciated the efforts of the students calling this achievement, “a momentous occasion in the history of the varsity.”
