Ghaziabad boy tops Jamia Millia Islamias engineering entrance exam.

Siddhant Tuli, a resident of Ghaziabad has topped FET-JMI (BTech entrance test of Jamia Millia Islamia). Tuli's preferred choice is computer engineering. The all India test, held in June this year, saw close to 30,000 students fight it out for 350 seats. This year, 47 girls have made it to the BTech programme at Jamia, with Fatima Mumtaz, a Delhi resident, topping in the girl's category.

BTech courses at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) are much sought after for a variety of reasons. A nominal fee close to Rs 9000 per annum makes it quite popular with engineering enthusiasts. Also, bus concessions along with other student benefits make JMI an attractive study destination for most students.

Commenting on the results, Professor Khalid Moin, dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET), says, "We are happy to welcome the new batch of BTech students to the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, JMI. Students will gain a lot from their association with the varsity, which offers dedicated academicians and researchers with a serious sense of belonging for this institution."

Early this year, the university had confirmed to scrap the interview process for BTech admissions this year onwards. Elaborating more on the move, Moin says, "FET probably was among the very few faculties that followed the entrance test with an interview. However, from this year onwards, the practice is being stopped." With the step in place, qualifying with merit in the entrance examination has become the sole criteria for gaining admission to the programme.

FET runs undergraduate courses leading to BTech in civil, electrical, mechanical, electronics and communication and computer engineering. The Faculty also offers postgraduate courses leading to MTech in various branches of engineering such as environmental science and engineering, electrical power system management, control and instrumentation system, mechanical engineering (production-industrial, thermal, design) and earthquake engineering. Research programmes leading to PhD are also being offered by all the six departments of the faculty.
