IIM-A, IIT-D, CEPT take the green route
The latest buzz is that Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), Center for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) University and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) are planning to turn Udaipur, Rajkot and Visakhapatnam into clean and green, pollution free cities.
The project aims to facilitate the civic authorities in setting up an environment friendly transport system in these cities withreduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emission rate. Financed by United Nations Environment Project (UNEP), this project is first one of its kind. IIM-A will handle the project planning aspect while IIT-D will focus on the technology and CEPT will take care of the inclusiveness and the mobility, reported The Times of India.
This is part of a bigger vision called 'Promoting Low Carbon Transport in India’, supported by the environment and urban development ministries, for carbon-free transportation by the year 2050.
Talat Munshi, assistant professor at CEPT who will be the consultant for this project, told TOI that CEPT will look at inclusive aspects of urban mobility using a low carbon model to promote public transport and reduce use of motor vehicles.
P R Shukla of IIMA faculty added that thefocus is on tier II cities. Different methods will be adopted for different cities taking into account factors such as climatic characteristics. Cities like Rajkot can look forward to having a metro service in the next few years. He stressed the need for a clear vision for every city. Lack of proper planning will prove very expensive in the long run, having to reconstruct later as per the emission norms under international conventions. Read more
