QS Asian University rankings saw Indian universities slippingMost Indian institutes and universities did rather badly in the recent QS Asian University rankings for 2012. Only IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi improved their ranking since last year. IIT Bombay currently holds 34th rank moving up from 38 last year. Similarly, IIT Delhi currently ranks 36 as compared to 37 last year.

Out of 300 Asian institutes ranked this year, the top 30 does not include any of the Indian institutes in terms of overall rankings. The number of Indian institutes to have made it to the top 50 dropped to four this year. Last year, five institutes were in the top 50. In fact, in the last five years (2009-2012), no Indian educational institute has made it to the top 10 slot, and only IIT Bombay featured in the top 30 in the year 2009.

According to a senior academician, this does not mean that the institutes or universities are not doing well. The rankings are based on several factors including international faculty and international students, where Indian universities lose out on points.

Among universities, only Delhi University featured among the top 100 at the 78th spot. All the other universities could not move beyond the top 200. While Mumbai University saw a significant drop from 96 (in 2010) to 145 (in 2011) and 151-160 in 2012. Calcutta University has also come down from 99 (in 2010) to 115 (in 2011) to 143 in 2012. However, an assessment of ranking by the faculty for "engineering and technology" shows that six IITs are amongst the top 50, but all of them have gradually tripped in their rankings from previous years'. IIT Kanpur has slipped down by 11 places from 36 to 47, IIT Guwahati from 82 to 89, IIT Kharagpur from 48 to 56 and IIT Madras from 43 to 45. IIT Roorkee saw a substantial drop in its ranking from 56 to 65.

According to the criterion ranking, none of the Indian institutes could gain a position amongst the top 200 in the "international students" and "international faculty". Neither could it amongst the top 100 in "faculty-student" category. However, Indian institutes seem to have performed better in ‘academic reputation" and "employer reputation" category. Read more
