IIT-B looks like the place for innovators
This year the MIT TR35 list saw name of four innovators including, V.S.K. Murthy Balijepalli, Nitin Joshi Vanteru Mahendra Reddy and Abhijit Majumder. The first three are from IIT-Bombay and Abhijit an alumnus from IIT-Kanpur.
This list by the Indian edition of MIT Technology Review includes the names of 20 innovators under 35 years of age in various areas including biomedicine, communications, computing, energy, materials, transportation and the web for 2012.
These innovators have amazed the country with their unique innovations. To start with, 26 yr old Balijepalli, developed a method to forecast electricity price, grid frequency and load that can help make power grids smarter while Joshi, 28 developed dual nanostructures to deliver a combination of two anti-cancer drugs - paclitaxel and curcumin which are found in turmeric. This will help in overcoming the limitation of chemotherapy. Mahendra Reddy, 30 was chosen for developing a lab-scale flameless combustion with liquid fuels. Abhijit Majumder, 33, IIT- Kanpur, developed highly innovative chemical adhesives that mimic some natural principles.
Priyanka Sharma, 28, from CSIR-run Institute of Microbial Technology and bhijeet Joshi, 28, from Ahmedabad's National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research were among the notable winners. Being the only woman in the list, Priyanka developed a plastic chip that uses simple techniques to detect toxic materials in the environment quickly. This year saw the increasing demands in two sectors primarily computing and web applications. The Technology Review India received more than 250 nominations and a panel of 23 judges selected the final 20. Venkatesan Oosur Vinayagam, 28, was judged as the Social Innovator of the year for the innovation of multilingual speech recognition technology enabled mobile music service based on the classic Indian musical game of antakshari. While the innovator of the year title was won by Aniruddha Sharma- creator of the haptic shoe for the visually impaired, the Humanitarian of the Year aws awarded to Somnath Ray, for redesigning the para-transit vehicle fro mobility as well as a mobile commerce platform.
