IITs to launch Mauritius campus

Mauritius is preparing to host the launch of the first overseas campus of the Indian Institutes of Technology to be set up in collaboration with Mauritius University. To be called International Institute of Technology (IIT), the establishment is not looking to offer any undergraduate courses but will maintain a research orientation for the initial five years under the mentorship of IIT-Delhi.
The feasibility report for the same has already been submitted to the Indian human resource development ministry as well as the Mauritius government. The campus awaits a green signal from both the governments to be able to start operations this year.
IIT-Delhi, taking the charge to give a global outlook to this institute is expected to deploy 40 faculty members who will dedicate at least one month of their time - three weeks in Mauritius and one week in India - to help develop the Mauritius center.
IITs have the expertise and the know-how to help a country set up an IIT-like institute and want to make their presence felt overseas, said IIT-Delhi director R K Shevgaonkar, in a report by Livemint. (Read full story)
It's not the first such announcement by an IIT. Few days back, IIT-Bombay talked about setting up a campus in New York which will be called as Centre for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP). The research-led centre will take care of the urgent needs of urban planning by offering masters and executive courses, and PhD opportunities. (Read full report)
