JEE 2014: 5 New language options

Since the launch of JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) last year, the exam will be conducted in 5 different languages including English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and Urdu (at only few centres in Gujarat and Maharashtra), this year.

Students taking the exam from Maharashtra can write the exam in Marathi, Urdu, English or Hindi, while those appearing for the exam from Gujarat can take the exam in Gujarati besides English and Hindi. The registrations for JEE Main- which is scheduled to be conducted on April 9, 11, 12 and 19 2014 - concluded yesterday, on January 6, 2014.

As per reports, around 340 students have registered to take the exam in Urdu, 938 in Marathi and 60,142 in Gujarati.

From 2014 onwards JEE Mains scores will be accepted for admission by three more states which are Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha  . Earlier in 2013, Gujarat, Haryana and Uttarakhand state governments used JEE (Mains) score for admissions to the technical institutes in the state. Bengal is also expected to join the league from the next academic session.

One of the JEE officials was quoted as saying “This is a positive trend and will help in giving a level playing field. We are hopeful that more states will join us next year. This will give us a wider platform to include more regional languages for the exam. In the long run, it will benefit the students".

The addition of three more states has ultimately given a boost to the registrations as compared to last year.
