Karnataka state govt scraps uniform fee structure for engg & medical courses
Going in line with the Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Fixation of Fee) Act, 2006, the Karnataka state government is discarding uniform fee structure for engineering, medical and dental courses. According to the state government, there will be no upper limit fixed for fees in private colleges, unaided colleges from the next academic session.
The fee will be decided by the Ajit J Gunjal, former Karnataka high court judge who currently is heading the fee regulatory committee.
Process of fee determination:
- The process will start with the colleges sending their respective fee structure proposals latest by December 31 to the committee.
- The second step will include the committee grading colleges on 4 broad parameters: infrastructure, coaching, location and course.
- Based on these parameters, the amount that colleges can charge will be determined.
Some key highlights of the decision:
Fee fixed for the next academic session will be stable for the next three years - 2014-15, 2015-16, and 2016-17.
The fee will be equal for the entire course, thus, whatever the amount a student pays in the first year will be same throughout the course.
Besides this, reserved category students will not have the benefit of concessions in private colleges, despite being entitled to subsidized education in government and aided colleges. One of the officials in a press statement said, “From now on, there will only be two categories of colleges, government and aided colleges in the first category and private colleges in the second. There will not be any discrimination among minority colleges that are unaided.”
