Odisha engg. colleges are optimistic about finding more eligible candidates for admissions this year with 7000 more students clearing OJEE as compared to last years total of 56,000.

The Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) 2012 result was announced yesterday (May 30). This year, OJEE saw improved results with 63,634 students qualifying the exam in the engineering stream out of the total 66,923 who appeared for it, reported The Times of India. Engineering colleges in the state are optimistic about finding more eligible candidates for admissions this year with 7000 more students clearing OJEE as compared to last year's total of 56,000, who qualified the test. With around 110 technical institutions in the state, there are approximately 40,000 B.Tech seats on offer. Last year around 24,000 seats remained vacant due to lack of students. That's why the improvement in this year's result means increased prospects for private engineering colleges. Binod Dash, honorary secretary, Odisha Private Engineering College Association (OPECA) told TOI that it is a positive development that at least 7,000 more students qualified the OJEE engineering. But he feels that the number is still unsatisfactory as a student pool of 1 lakh students is needed to fill 40,000 seats.

Dash suggested that the government should "give a free hand" to private colleges in filling up vacant seats after admissions are done from the OJEE pool. According to another TOI report, Odisha might join the all India joint entrance examination (JEE), which is starting from next year. OPECA supports the proposition of the state joining the national-level test. "We have been requesting the Odisha government to give weightage to Class XII examination in the entrance for the past five years. It is a welcome step," Dash told TOI. (Read complete story)

The OJEE authorities will conduct a web-based counseling for qualified candidates in the third week of June. According to the technical education and training director, 20 nodal centers for counseling will be set up five days prior to commencement of counseling. They will wrap up the admission procedure in July so that classes can be started from August 1.
