Mystory@Smita R. Talukdar: How I made the most of my college years
My engineering college days were full of fun and energy. We would learn not only from classes but also through various activities such as role play, group discussions to name a few. I would participate in various extra-curricular activities such as singing, dancing, sports etc.
Hostel life was more awesome and we learnt to share knowledge via different modes. I would study topic by topic and teach the others as well. Also, we learnt the most valuable lesson for life that is being self-dependent as we were away from home and had to manage everything on our own, right from maintaining expenses, cleaning up everything and all other sundry but necessary items. Coming from a middle-class family, I was trained to keep a tab on all expenses and also learnt to save from my limited pocket money. The second most important lesson I learnt was that of flexibility. I used to share my room with another student and we had to adjust to each other’s flaws, we did and managed to become best of friends. We used to enjoy various festivals and celebrating together was so much more fun than words can explain. Along with technical knowledge, the first lesson of independence started here.
College education not only provided me with a job to earn my livelihood, it also taught me the way to survive in today’s difficult world. It helped me prepare for all types of challenges in my later life.
As an Indian girl, I was always told to choose a profession in either medicine or teaching. But I always wanted to do things differently, I chose to follow my dream. I joined electrical engineering which is rare for girls. When I was interviewing for a job, I was asked if I would opt for a back office sitting job like estimation and designing or field work that included marketing. I was the only girl to choose marketing. In today's world, girls in the field of electrical marketing can be counted on the finger tips. It has been a roller coaster ride and I can proudly say that I was able to survive despite all adverse situations. I might have made mistakes along the way but have always tried to learn from these. I have no regrets today as I have lived the way I wanted to live.
