Only 10% IITians are girls
Analysing patterns of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) results 2012, the Joint Admission Board found that out of all the students admitted to 15 IITs, only 10% were girls. In other engineering institutes, including prestigious ones, the gender ratio is more balanced with 30-40 per cent girls securing admission.
Academic experts feel that the coaching industry could be a key contributing factor for the gender imbalance in the IITs. Most Indian parents prefer not to send their daughters to far-flung coaching institutes at Kota or Hyderabad. Read more
The findings also revealed that 50% students who entered IITs were from state boards while 40% were from CBSE. Most of the students who secured a seat in IITs this year were from middle class and belonged to urban India.
Top 10 cities with a dominant coaching culture for IIT JEE preparation and boasting of maximum IIT selections include Jaipur, Hyderabad, Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow and Allahabad.
The findings of the analysis serve as an indicator to make exams more dynamic, modern and responsive.
