In a recent interaction with Shiksha, Dr. Shrihari Honwad, talks about what's unique about studying at MIT- WPU, Pune Maharashtra, the kind of student projects, internships and placement opportunities that students have; the best programs to study here and how does one secure admission to them.

 

Dr. Shrihari Honwad, Pro-Vice-Chancellor MIT- WPU, a senior academician with administrative and governance experience. Dr. Honwad started his career as a teaching assistant with Industrial exposure, his career spans through a path where he became a researcher, and eventually a teacher. He had the privilege of getting into Academic governance through Board of studies and Academic Council and Institutional governance through the Board of Management and Board of Governors. Dr. Honwad has worked in unitary, deemed and affiliating universities in India. He also had the opportunity to visit universities abroad in Spain, France, Turkey, Malaysia, and Thailand. Further, he has published several international papers and has guided four Ph.D. students.  He is a Chartered Engineer (UK) and a chartered Energy Engineer and Fellow of Energy Institute (UK).

Q: What are the salient features of the teaching methodology adopted by your college? How does this differ from others?

Teaching Methodology is getting transformed over the years and MIT World Peace University is keeping ahead of the curve of transformation. Team teaching, Problem Based Teaching, Active learning techniques are used in our teaching methodology. Experiential Learning is given a lot of importance through laboratory, fieldwork, and team projects.

Q: How are you preparing your students to be Industry ready?

Students need to be Industry ready. Our Board of Studies has extensive Industry representation to ensure curricular readiness. Further, through our active MoUs and Guest lectures, there is continuous exposure to the Industry professionals and state of the art practices. Further, the project work students do are real-life projects and finally, the trimester long internship in the Industry ensures that the students are not only industry ready but are evaluated for that by the industry even while they are still studying.

Q: What are the qualities you are looking for in student applicants? What qualities do they need to do well in your course?

I can vouch for our student's values that they inculcate through the peace program. Further, they develop team skills and excellent communication skills. They have a great appreciation of the reality of rural strife and at the same time, they have a global mindset in finding solutions to societal problems.

Q: How do you ensure that your course curriculum is up to date and meets industry requirements?

I am very sure it meets industry requirements as it is developed with the active participation of the industry under the advice of industry thought leaders and academicians of the highest caliber.

Q: Is your college receptive to innovation, technology, science & entrepreneurship? How? Could you cite some examples of these? 

We have a very long history of innovation, research and a good list of entrepreneurial alumni who have been successful in their ventures. There is a culture of entrepreneurship amongst final year students. We have a Technology Business Incubator Cell which fosters this culture.
