Score 45% for an engineering seat
In states like Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, getting into engineering colleges is simpler than obtaining a seat in the under-graduate colleges. According to a Times of India report, many students with 75% marks failed to obtain a seat in the under-graduate colleges of their choice during an online admission process introduced recently by the higher education department. Whereas, more than 20,000 students with minimum 45% marks in class XII took admission in the engineering colleges without even appearing in the pre-engineering test (PET) 2011.
Officials of Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) told TOI that the decision to allow admission on the basis of Class XII marks was taken up to fill the vacant seats in the engineering colleges. However, thousands of seats may lie vacant after the counseling session this year as well.
According to DTE policy, once the counseling is over, students with 45% marks in Class XII, who did not even appear in the PET, would get admission. So far approximately 40,000 out of the 55,000 who registered in the engineering colleges have made their choices against 95,000 engineering seats in various colleges. (Read more)
While this comes as a boon for students with poor scores who wish to pursue engineering; colleges are worried about quality and are not so happy with the DTE's decision. A common engineering entrance test at the national level could prove to be the best solution to this issue. Admission after clearing competitive test would help to ensure quality engineers in the future.
According to another TOI report, 22 students belonging to SC and ST, even after scoring zero in the Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) have still got admission into engineering and agriculture courses. Sources told TOI that these students have qualified as they got the minimum 40% marks in their class XII exam. (Read more).
