Govt To Set Up Three Universities For Minorities
Central government is planning to set up three universities for the country's minorities. It had recently allocated Rs 25 crore for two more campuses of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The three new universities will be set up with a view to providing better higher education to minorities. These universities will come up in Mysore (Karnataka), Kishanganj (Bihar) and Ajmer (Rajasthan).

Four IT-BHU Students Booked For Ragging
Taking a zero-tolerance stance on ragging, IT-BHU has expelled four students from the institute for two years. The students were arrested for allegedly ragging a fresher by forcing him to dance like a male stripper outside the university campus. The victim, a student of B Tech-Chemical Engineering at the institute was thrashed by the seniors and his mobile phone and Rs 1100 in cash were snatched.

French Students Visit IIM-B Under Exchange Programme
14 students from the HEC School of Management (HEC), Paris, visited the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB) under an exchange programme for students. They learnt about Indian culture and the business opportunities and scope in Bangalore during the week-long stay at IIMB. They visited many companies and attended lectures. In December, a group of 14 IIM-B students will visit the Paris-based institute to learn about how the corporate sector functioned.

New Academic Calendar At Mumbai University
The Mumbai University has drawn up a new academic calendar to compensate for the 36 days lost due to the teachers' strike. As per the new plan, the first-term exams will begin after December 1 and be completed by December 12. Classes will be held till November 30 to complete the syllabus. The second term will begin on December 14. Subsequently, the university exams, which generally start in mid-March every year, have been scheduled from April 10, 2010. Also, the 21-day Diwali vacation has been limited to three days while a day's holiday has been proposed for Christmas.

Pay Teachers' Arrears In 16 Days: SC To Kerala
The Supreme Court has instructed the Kerala government to pay arrears to part-time teachers by this month. The arrears have been pending for 17 years. Taking a strict stance on the situation, the apex court has warned the state government of a scrutiny of expenses on ministers and legislators if the arrears were not paid in the designated time. Kerala counsel had cited paucity of funds as the reason for not being able to implement its Aug 19, 2008 decision for the payment of arrears with retrospective effect from 1992.
