28 women got through to IIM BangaloreThe ratio of male-female students at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) is showing a trend towards gender diversity without compromising on merit, as more women students join the IIM league.

Recently, 28 women have paved their way to the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B) to join the institute’s innovative women’s leadership programme. Rajasthan governor Margaret Alva inaugurated the 10-week India-Women in Leadership Programme of the Centre for Public Policy, IIM-Bangalore and Centre for Social Research, New Delhi.

Belonging to different parts of the country, the 28 female candidates have been selected after rigorous rounds of interviews. The programme is meant to focus on policies, politics and practical aspects of governance, besides providing an understanding of ideology and gender issues. Towards building a perspective on governance, each of them will need to spend a considerable amount of time at their home-constituencies, as part of the program.

Apart from the classes at IIM-B, the candidates will also get an opportunity to stay for a week each in Delhi and Singapore. During this stay, they will get an opportunity to interact with leading politians including the prime minister. Read more

 Encouraging trend at IIMs

Women comprise more than a quarter of the 2012-14 batch of the post-graduate programme (PGP) at IIM-Bangalore and about 15% of the students in the batch are non-engineers. Read full story

Likewise, IIM Lucknow has admitted 167 female candidates in its PGP and PGP-agri-business management batch, while 20% of the students are non-engineers.

Similarly, at IIM Ahmedabad, 16.8% candidates are females, and 364 of the total 381 are non- engineers. IIM Rohtak also saw an improvement in the ratio of women students this year as it welcomed a fairly diverse set of students in its third batch. Read full story
