Cheerful reason for techies top spots in CAT again!
The getting admission in country’s premier management institute might be the dream of many. This years CAT 2009 may have shattered the dreams of some and for some it may be an experience to look forward. The students form all educational stream applied for the IIMs. Even the IIM authority always tries to maintain a good mix of students from all streams. This year also the IIMs may have planned to take students from varied educational background and fields but for those who are from engineering or technical background leading the
race of admission. All 11 students who were within the 100th percentile this year are from engineering or tech backgrounds, with six of them from the elite Indian Institutes of Technology.
This year CAT exam ended in two phase. Over 2.5 lakh students took exam. Varun Mangamoori of IIT Madras, managed to score 299 out of 450 and topped the chart of shortlisted candidates for admission.
It has been constantly observed that students from engineering and technical background managed to get into 100 percentile club. CAT aspirants with similar background this year too managed to good percentile. . Last year, for instance, of the nine students who stood within the 100th percentile, a majority were from the IITs, and one each from the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad and NIT, Trichy. Last year’s 100th percentilers Gourav Bhattacharya was from IIT Bombay and K Ravi from IIT Madras, while Sayan Sarkar and Ankit Anand were both from IIT Kharagpur.
Securing a 100th percentile does not mean that you will surely get admission into one of the IIMs. Last year one candidate was rejected at the GD/PI level at IIM-Calcutta for not able to make the sectional cut-off in one of the three sections- it’s considered a big achievement in B-school circles.
Getting the high percentile not only help you in bagging the scholarship, it is also a value addition to your resume and as well as for the placement round. One of the spokesperson from CAT told that all those in the 100th percentile have scored above 99.9% in the individual sections as well. He also added in this context that CAT toppers are majorly from technical background, since they have strong understanding on quantitative and data interpretation sections so they manage to get score high in this section. It’s not something that a student with a regular maths/commerce/arts background will find easy to emulate.
