The HRD ministry has given approval to AICTE's proposal for a single entrance exam for management aspirants. This exam would be held on the lines of CAT. The Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) will replace the current state level and national level entrance exams for management programmes except CAT.

The first ever CMAT is scheduled to be held from 20th to 28th February, 2012. It is expected that over 2.5 lakh candidates will appear in the exam. This exam will be a key MBA entrance test for AICTE approved B-schools. A ministry official said that, this exam will reduce the exam burden on students.

AICTE is under process to make it mandatory for all recognized schools to admit students only through CMAT. At present, there are more than 4000 management schools in the country, offering close to 3.5 lakh seats. It would be a computer based exam and the duration of the exam will be three hours.
