IIM-C to offer double master's degree

Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) has stepped up to globalise its course offerings. It will soon enter into a partnership with Confederation of Europe Management Schools (CEMS), an elite group of 28 business schools worldwide such as London School of Economics, HEC France, Essade Spain and HKUST Hong Kong. The deal will be signed in November.

CEMS does not accept membership from B-schools in the US.

IIM-C will be the first Indian B-school to be part of the CEMS and has gone through a rigorous selection procedure. It will now be able to offer students a choice to earn a double master’s degree – PGDM from IIM-C as well as Master of International Management (MIM) from one of its partner institutes. MIM is one of the top 5 best-rated global management degrees.

The focus of IIM-C is on quantitative courses, and it being the only IIM with a Management Centre for Human Values (MCHV) gave it an edge in winning over CEMS approval.

The B-school is in the process of modifying its two-year flagship programmes – PGDM and PGDCM – so that students of 2013-2014 batch will be able to get the MIM degree when they graduate from their courses. Only 27 students will be selected for the new programme on the basis of their first-year results.

These 27 students will have to attend course modules designed by one of the other 27 B-school members of CEMS at its respective campus. They will have to put in at least 75 hours of extra classroom contact apart from an international project that they will have to do. This will mean that they will spend three months abroad and will return to IIM C for the final term.

IIM-C is also in the process of tying up with several foreign companies to offer summer internships to CEMS students for their mandatory international project.
