Being one of the top management institutes, IIM Calcutta never runs out of the track. It always keeps something in store, as this time it is in news regarding the privatization issue. As per the IIM officials they are ready for the corporate collaborations but they are not in favour of privatization of IIM's. They shall want to continue with the autonomous status of the institutes. These corporate collaborations are happening as some of the IIMs are new birds in the flock and they would not be able to generate enough revenue and would not be able to provide adequate resources in the initial years.

Recently IIM Calcutta has celebrated its 46th annual Convocation at the IIM C campus at Joka. It is one of the most important days in the history of IIM C and students have been eagerly waiting for this moment as this is going to be the best time of the year when students will be awarded the academic recognition. Meleveetil Damodaran was the chief guest; he is the ex-chairman of the SEBI and currently he holds the position of chairman. Mr. Ajit Balakrishnan, who is CEO of Rediff.com and the Chairman of IIMC Board of Governors were also mesmerized the environment by their presence. Diplomas were awarded to 348 students in PGDM and 35 in PGDCM whereas only five students were awarded for fellowships. 44 students in PGPEX and 29 students in PGPEX-VLM were also awarded for diploma.

Convocation held successfully at IIM C and it gave smile to many faces. Some of the parents have also attended the convocation and when asked to them...some said it's an overwhelming moment for them. It has also announced that it is planning to come up with some new courses which would encourage the number of women. These courses will attract more women students and it will be equivalent to Post graduate Diploma in Business Management.

Placements at IIM C is like a bombshell; it always explodes something new and exciting. Financial sector was at stake in the last placement year, and was closely followed by the consulting and marketing sectors. Financial sector has ruled the placements with the total of 31.3 percent of the offers. IIM Calcutta is also better known as the ‘Finance Campus of India'. In 2010, it has bagged the highest numbers of offers during the final placement ‘slot zero' among all IIMs. Some of the students have also got pre-placement offers (PPOs) as all the 353 students who participated in the placement process has received offers from the 125 recruiters in the five day process. 140 companies have appeared out of which 100 offers were made to the students.

This year a new process namely ‘'deferred placements'' has been offered by IIM Calcutta. It is ruled out for those students who want to pursue entrepreneurship, work in social sector, or want to join a government organization or pursue higher education; they are allowed to log out from the placement process and can join it anytime in the next 3 years.

Even IIM Calcutta is also planning to organize CAT 2011, which is one of the big news in itself. CAT is one of the most important exams of the country. To organize this exam IIM Lucknow will help and will take care of the operations as well. But this year its going to be a big dime as this is a testing time for conducting CAT online. As online system had to face some network connectivity problem but the team is handling and trying to sort out the problems so that there will be no technical snags. It will also stay in touch with the other IIMs to get proper help and guidance.

IIM Calcutta is also planning to set up a campus in Dubai. It will be the first overseas campus in Dubai and it will aim towards to achieve the international status. Currently it offers various short duration programmes in different fields of management education for company executives in some other overseas location like Singapore, Colombo, Dhaka, and Kuala Lumpur. It is planning to expand more in other Asian Countries like China as well.

It is planning to come up with a new course on eco-friendly technology as a post graduate program for executives from the 2010-11 session. It has been designed to meet the worldwide plunge on eco-friendly technologies; this new course is being titled as ‘green manufacturing' for its Post Graduate Programme for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM) starting 2010-11. This course will cover all aspects related to green manufacturing and technologies which will include green supply chain management, green marketing etc, non-conventional energy sources, concept of 3R (reuse, recycle, reproduce) and the principle of energy and resource conservancy. Technically experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) would also take some sessions on green manufacturing course.
