Marketing and Finance ruled IIM Shillong Placements 2012

With economic slowdown threatening to hit recruitments, the placement season was thought to be uncertain this year. However, despite a 40% increase in the 2012 batch size, IIM Shillong saw successful placements with 44 companies making a total of 105 offers to 93 students.

 

The highest salary package offered was Rs 19 lakh per annum while the average salary package was around Rs 12 lakh per annum.

 

The selection of recruiters included big names across various sectors.

 

Marketing became the favourite domain with 38 per cent students opting for it. Companies like Tata Motors, Pidilote, and Godfrey Phillips extended offers for their Sales & Marketing and Business Development divisions. Pharmaceutical and Healthcare companies like Pfizer, Biocon, and GlaxoSmithKline too recruited IIM Shillong students for their Marketing divisions.

 

Recently, IIM Shillong represented India for the second consecutive time at the Global Investment Research Challenge (GIRC), conducted by the CFA institute, in Hong Kong. Led by the GIRC success, Finance emerged as the next most preferred sector as 25 per cent students opted for it. Among other top companies, Goldman Sachs made its first visit to IIM Shillong campus this year. Yes Bank was the largest recruiter in the Finance domain and hired seven students. Other organisations extending offers included Nomura Investments, HSBC, RBI, ICICI Bank, and SBI Capital. The fields in which these organisations were hiring included Investment Banking, Equity Research, Consumer Banking, Project Advisory and Capital Markets divisions. The other popular domains included Consulting represented by Deloitte, Cognizant, and HCL Technologies among others; Operations represented by Tata Motors, Tata Steel and UB Group among others; and General Management represented by first-time participant Tata Administrative Services (TAS), along with other companies including Apollo Hospitals, and Manipal Group.

 

A few days ago, IIM Ranchi had also reported a successful placement season with 43 graduates bagging top jobs this year and the highest salary being as high as Rs 24 lakh (approx). Read more about IIM Ranchi Placements
